Recent coverage in MyLondon and This Is Local London has brought much-needed attention to the growing challenges families face in accessing speech and language therapy (SLT) across the capital.
The reports highlighted how changes to local authority contracts in Croydon left some children without consistent support, reflecting a wider, nationwide concern about delays in therapy provision.

At Baby Speak, we see first-hand how vital early, consistent speech therapy is for a child’s communication, confidence, and learning.

Why Consistent Speech Therapy Matters

Children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) depend on regular input to develop the skills they need to learn, express themselves, and connect with others.

Without consistent therapy, children may start to withdraw socially and fall behind at school. Research by Speech and Language UK (2024) found that children with untreated SLCN are:

  • Six times more likely to fall behind in English

  • Eleven times more likely to fall behind in Maths by age 11

  • Twice as likely to experience unemployment as adults

These figures highlight just how much communication skills influence not only academic progress, but also emotional wellbeing, relationships, and long-term life opportunities.

Early Intervention Makes a Lasting Difference

Speech and language therapy is most effective when introduced early. Supporting children during the key developmental window from birth to school age helps lay the foundation for communication, learning, and social understanding.

Early therapy can:

  • Strengthen listening and attention skills

  • Improve confidence and reduce frustration

  • Support social interaction and emotional regulation

  • Set children up for success in school and beyond

If you’re worried about your child’s communication, it’s always best to seek advice early. Even brief parent coaching or a single consultation can give you strategies to help your child progress at home.

A Growing Need Across London

As discussed in MyLondon and This Is Local London, therapists across the city are reporting the same pattern:

  • More referrals than ever before

  • Greater complexity in children’s communication needs

  • Longer waiting times for local NHS services

These pressures stem from a national shortage of speech and language therapists, increasing recognition of neurodiverse communication profiles (such as Autism and ADHD), and the impact of Covid-19 on children’s early social experiences.

As a result, many families are waiting months for support, even when their child’s needs are clearly identified or supported by an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
